This is a slipware square plate made by Yumachi Gama in Shimane Prefecture. Slipware is a traditional technique popular in England from the 18th to 19th centuries, using a slip (liquid clay) for decoration. In Japan, it was developed by the founders of the Mingei movement, and Yumachi Gama is one of the kilns that follows that tradition. It is characterized by its richly colored pottery using locally sourced clay and glaze, and it has also received guidance from Bernard Leach. It has been on my shelf for a long time.
