Album Title: The State Of Tenor Live at The Village Vanguard Vol. 1 Joe Henderson (ts), who was active from the hard bop era of the golden age of modern jazz, made a brilliant debut in 1963 with his first leader album Page One (BLP4140) recorded for Blue Note. He has left behind many masterpieces, including those on Blue Note, and this is a great work recorded for the newly revived Blue Note in 1985, more than 20 years later. This is a live album recorded at the Village Vanguard, a famous New York live house with a long history and the stage for many legendary performances, and the sound he pursues remains unchanged even as times change. Here, with Ron Carter (b) and Al Foster (ds), and a piano-less trio with members who have a presence as veterans, each with a commanding presence as a major figure, they develop a wonderful interplay. Thinking back, 28 years earlier, in 1957, Sonny Rollins left the masterpiece A Night at The Village Vanguard in the same place, with a similar trio.
