This is a highly accomplished crystal lidded work (small container) created around 1900, during the peak of the Art Nouveau period, by Val Saint Lambert, a prestigious crystal workshop known as the purveyor to the Belgian Royal Family. A deep, clear cobalt blue overlay glass is applied to a clear crystal with high transparency, and then an acid etching technique is used to bring out naturalistic plant patterns. This decorative technique required advanced processes even at the time. The patterns do not realistically reproduce specific plants, but rather express the natural sense of life and organic rhythm in a poetic way unique to Art Nouveau, with a depth that greatly changes the impression depending on the viewing angle and the way the light enters. The design continues seamlessly from the lid to the sides, and the clear glass without overlay is used only for the bottom, allowing the workshop's official signature to be clearly engraved. This composition is a legitimate and highly-regarded specification seen in Val Saint Lambert works of the same era. Despite its small size, the density of the form, technique, and design is very high, and it gives a sense of completion as an Art Nouveau craft work, going beyond a mere decorative item.
