The teacup has a semi-cylindrical shape, with a body that rises almost straight, and sharp lines at the waist and foot. Kenzan's teacups are based on a shape called "dōjime-gata" (waist-tightened shape), where the body is slightly curved, but in this work, there is almost no curve in the body, and it is straight. The shape that Kenzan based his work on is a type of sometsuke (blue and white porcelain) fired during the Ming dynasty in China, called "Undō-de chawan" (Undō-style teacup), and teacups with paintings and inscriptions utilizing the flat surface began to be fired.
