Endora, a small town in Iowa. Gilbert, a young man who has never left this unremarkable town in his 24 years, spends his days caring for his handicapped younger brother Arnie, his morbidly obese mother who suffers from an eating disorder and is unable to move, and his two sisters. Gilbert, who is preoccupied with protecting his family and has lost sight of his own dreams and hopes, meets Becky, a girl who lives traveling in a trailer. Through his interaction with Becky, who is staying in town for a while due to a car breakdown, Gilbert reconsiders his own life. Johnny Depp plays Gilbert, Leonardo DiCaprio plays Arnie, and Juliette Lewis plays Becky. DiCaprio was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. This is a film adaptation of Peter Hedges' novel of the same name, with Hedges himself writing the screenplay.
