Born on June 25th, 845. The third son of Sugawara no Koreyoshi. A Monjō Hakase (Doctor of Literature). Highly regarded by Emperor Uda. In 894, he advised the cancellation of the envoy to Tang China. In 899, he became Udaijin (Minister of the Right), but due to slander by Fujiwara no Tokihira, Sadaijin (Minister of the Left), he was demoted to Dazaifu Gon no Sotsu (Provisional Governor of Dazaifu) and died in Dazaifu on February 25th, 903. Age 59. Feared for his curse, he was posthumously awarded the rank of Shōichii (Senior First Rank) and the title of Daijō Daijin (Grand Minister of State), and was worshipped as Tenjin (god of learning). His azana (courtesy name) was San. Commonly known as Sugake, Sugakō.
