Specifically, it refers to a small card with a portrait photograph mounted on a cardboard backing, which became widespread in Europe, including France, in the 19th century. These were typically the size of a calling card and were exchanged as introductions or souvenirs in social and business settings. These are real photos from the time, including the backing.
