This is a set of red and black lacquered bowls by wood artist Yasuhiro Satake (1952–2020). A small dot of lacquer on the bottom is his signature mark. They are made by hollowing out natural wood and have been stored unused. Satake was a wood turner with excellent skills. He faced the wood and created forms as if listening to its voice. This work was purchased at a solo exhibition for 24,000 yen plus tax per bowl. It was finished by thinly hollowing out natural wood using a potter's wheel. When I encountered this work, I was first amazed by its exquisite thinness. As you slide your finger along the curve, you can feel the texture of the wood on your finger. The lacquer applied on top of it shows a rich expression depending on the way the light hits it and the angle. "Black" is like the quiet night sea where the light of bioluminescent organisms flickers, "Red" is like the dawn sea where life slowly ignites, gathering light. That's the impression I got. I feel that it is a deep beauty of lacquer that is made possible because of the solid skill of a wood turner, while firmly preserving the volume and rise of the wood. Every time you pick it up and look at it, or catch a glimpse of it, it has a presence that seems to calm your mind a little. I think it would also look great as a single piece for special occasions, such as a celebratory meal. Satake passed away in 2020, and such works will not be produced again.
