"Dimple" means "indentation" in English, and it's characterized by the varying sizes of indentations on the key's surface. Dimple cylinders are generally an evolution of pin tumbler cylinders. While pin tumbler cylinders have only one row of tumblers, most dimple cylinders have two or more rows. This achieves an overwhelming number of key variations and pick resistance. Since these cylinders began to be widely adopted after 2000, when picking by theft rings became rampant, it can be said that many houses built within the last 20 years have adopted them.
