Living National Treasure, Sueo Koda, was born in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture on January 4, 1929. He studied under his father, Eisuke Koda, from an early age, and learned Seigo Sendai-hira, the traditional Sendai-hira production technique. Since then, he has strived to improve his skills under the strict guidance of his father, Eisuke Koda, and succeeded the family business, the Goshi Kaisha Honba Sendai-hira Factory (currently Goshi Kaisha Sendai-hira). Continuing to produce Sendai-hira, he was certified as a holder of the Miyagi Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property "Seigo Sendai-hira" technique in 1976. He has been deeply researching traditional techniques to preserve their strengths, and has been dedicated to weaving excellent Sendai-hira with distinctive designs. On July 8, 2002, Eisuke Koda and Sueo Koda, father and son, were certified as holders of the Important Intangible Cultural Property "Seigo Sendai-hira" technique, and continue to this day.
