Villa-Lobos is one of Brazil's leading composers of the 20th century. He himself played the guitar, so he left behind works that take advantage of the guitar's sound and characteristics. "12 Etudes" are Villa-Lobos' representative works for guitar. These etudes not only improve the right and left-hand techniques for performance but also have a high degree of musical completeness as guitar pieces, making them very useful for studying musical expression. However, the published scores contain numerous points that appear to be misprints from the original manuscript, and the inconsistent notation of harmonics and repetitions has led to different interpretations by performers. Now that Villa-Lobos is no longer with us, it is impossible to clarify all the ambiguities, and honestly, it is difficult to provide the best fingerings. However, I have researched and corrected any parts where the notation appears to be erroneous as much as possible, and I have aimed for left-hand fingerings that are as comfortable as possible and easy for intermediate guitarists to play. Furthermore, I have made improvements for clarity and made the following changes: * I have tried to avoid using accidentals that are used "just in case" to prevent frequent sharps, flats, and naturals. Where accidentals are exceptionally necessary in such cases, they are indicated in parentheses. * Harmonics notation While the original notation for harmonics sometimes varied between scores, for clarity, harmonics are indicated by ◆, with the string (circled number) and fret position clearly marked, and appropriate fingerings have been added. * Addition of Japanese translations for musical terms Japanese translations have been added to musical terms and performance indications written to convey the image and playing style of the piece to the performer. * Layout that reduces the number of pages The layout uses repeat signs to reduce the number of pages. * Notes have been added for passages where interpretation is divided.
