This is a long undergarment (nagajuban) made of high-quality crepe silk (seika chirimen). The sleeves and shoulders are dyed a subdued, grayish blue, which gradually fades towards the hem, transitioning into a slightly bluish gray, known as "ai-nezu" (indigo gray). The back features a depiction of distant mountains and a village with a boat landing, rendered in a lighter shade. The upper left of the painting bears the name of Sesshu and the signature (Sesshu) Toyo. Sesshu is said to have lived from around 1420 to 1560. Sesshu, who displayed artistic talent from a young age, is known for legendary episodes, such as the "Tears of the Mouse" and his training in painting in China. There is an episode where Sesshu, who was more dedicated to painting than to the training to become a Zen monk, was scolded by the chief priest one morning and tied to a pillar. When the priest peeked in the evening, the mouse drawn with Sesshu's tears was moving around. The lining of the undergarment is a habutae (silk fabric) of a color-matched body lining, dyed in a grayish-green "chigusa-nezu" (chigusa gray).
