A long time ago, when Bali wasn't yet a major tourist destination and people in Japan were still a bit apprehensive about traveling to Indonesia, I was drawn to the music and art of Bali and visited the area in Ubud where many artisans were gathered. In Ubud, small workshops were interspersed among the local houses, creating traditional handmade products. I spent an entire day there, never tiring of looking around. This basket is made by weaving incredibly thin bamboo strips into intricate patterns, matching the top, sides, and even the lid, which is designed with horn-like protrusions at the corners. I realized it was a product of truly skilled craftsmanship. The elderly craftsman proudly explained various things with gestures when I expressed my admiration. I'm sure it's a scene that no longer exists. I have treasured it along with a magnificent wood carving of a water bird and tropical fish from a separate wood carving workshop. To help you appreciate the skill involved, I've taken photos of the whole basket, as well as details of the parts, the inside, and the bottom. Because I've kept it carefully stored in a case, it's surprisingly clean, and the condition is exactly as it was when I bought it. The handle is also woven from bamboo.
