He was the 9th lord of the Hitachi Mito domain. He was the biological father of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, the 15th (and last) shogun of the Edo shogunate. Born as the third son of the 7th lord, Tokugawa Harumichi. His mother was Hoko, the adopted daughter of Gon-Chunagon Mitsuzane Toyama (daughter of Sukemochi Machi). His childhood name was Torasaburo, later Keizaburo. Initially, he received a part of his father Harumichi's name and was called Matsudaira Toshinori. After becoming the lord, he received a part of the 11th shogun Tokugawa Ienari's name and was named Tokugawa Nariaki. His posthumous name is Rekko, his azana is Shishin, and his go is Kageyama, Senryukaku. He was one of the great lords of the late Edo period who succeeded in reforming the domain's administration. However, he lost the political struggle with the Tairo Ii Naosuke in the succession dispute for the shogun and was forced into permanent confinement, where he died.
