Swatow (Shantou) hand-embroidered handkerchiefs. Antique lace. A set of two with geometric patterns & floral designs. These have been stored at my grandmother's house for at least 40 years. She thinks they were purchased in Hong Kong. ● Geometric Pattern Handkerchief Size: Approximately 28cm Damage: There is a 5mm stain due to aging in one place (see photo). It seems it was used a few times to put in a bag during formal occasions. It was not used to wipe hands, but only as a matter of etiquette, so please be aware of this. ● Simple Floral Handkerchief Size: Approximately 30cm Damage: Unused. Because it was stored without the box, there are age-related stains on the edges that are not noticeable, and a few small, faint stains in some places. I have taken photos, so please check them. ◎ About Shantou Embroidery Traditional embroidery from Shantou, Guangdong Province, China. It spread in the Shantou region after missionaries introduced European lace embroidery techniques. It has been passed down from parents to children for generations, but the difficulty of handwork and the development of machine embroidery have led to a decrease in the number of people carrying on the tradition. Black ink, which serves as a guideline for hand embroidery, remains. When I hear Shantou handkerchiefs, I personally imagine grayish embroidery, but this black ink seems to be the source of the beautiful gray tone. It seems it will wash off, but I'm afraid to use it because it's a shame. Since these are quite old, please check the photos for details and consider purchasing.
