The vertical CT117 tends to splash water, so a horizontal type like the CT059 is recommended.

If you think it's broken:
Water is splashing wildly → Is the hose too long, allowing air to enter?
The hose floats up and can't draw water → Attach the air stone that came with the pump to the end of the hose.
