It was a gift, and it has been carefully stored, unused and in new condition. (It was taken out of the bag only once for the photos.) The box is also in beautiful condition, with no noticeable scratches or stains. Ujo-bori is a traditional craft of Okayama Prefecture, and each piece is hand-carved and hand-painted by artisans. The beautiful paintwork, which makes the most of the wood grain, uses precious domestic raw lacquer, giving it an antique, moist, and calm texture. The color is a slightly dark impression and not flashy, so I think it is easy to use daily. The more you use it, the more flavor it gains, so you can enjoy nurturing the tool. According to the included catalog, it appears to be a product sold as a "bread plate." It features carvings of peaches and grapes, specialties of Okayama. The bread plate has a very shallow indentation on the top surface (it looks almost flat at a glance), designed to create a gap between the bread and the plate, allowing steam to escape.
