This is a Riichi Urano tate-bushi tsumugi (vertical knot紬) kimono, a lined (awase) garment, with a partial lining (dounuki) construction. It is a re-tailored gentleman's kimono that has been unpicked and washed. It has been altered with a waist adjustment (ohashori) insert. Suitable for someone approximately 159cm-161cm tall. The lining (hakkake) is a deep purple. It's a stylish combination with the brown striped outer fabric. The shoulder area, from 58-74cm, is carefully re-tailored to be hidden when worn. He left behind works using various techniques such as tsumugi weaving, bingata, yuzen, and sarasa, and influenced many dyeing and weaving artists of later generations. Because he was an artist who did not disclose his own career, the details of his career are unknown. He became famous for supervising the kimonos in Yasujiro Ozu's films. Especially his tate-bushi tsumugi (vertical knot紬) is well-known, and the rustic tsumugi weave, woven roughly using hand-spun knot yarn, is still very popular today for both kimonos and obi.
