This is a synthetic leather kozutsumi (small hand drum). It has a wooden body with a parallel hemp rope tuning system. Synthetic leather kozutsumi are highly recommended for beginners. They are less affected by temperature and humidity, relatively easy to store and maintain, and are said to produce a stable sound.
