● Shintai (Divine Mask) This mask is literally a mask of a god. It is sometimes written as "shinyo" (divine appearance). The word "tai" (body) is the "nikyoku santai no kata" (two-part, three-body style) favored by Zeami. Zeami referred to old men, women, and warriors as rotai (old body), nyotai (woman's body), and guntai (warrior's body), respectively. In this case, "shintai" refers to the god itself, meaning the mask of the god. However, even when referring to a god, the head of the Hosho school, said, "This is also like a crescent moon, and because it is a mask of Sumiyoshi, it is called shinyo." As such, it is particularly used for the waki-noh and kami-mai (god dance) plays such as "Takasago" and "Yumi Hachiman," which feature the original young male gods of Japan. It has a pale ocher color, with neatly drawn hair on the eyebrows and sideburns, and a crown shape drawn on the forehead. Furthermore, above all, metal fittings are inserted into the eyes to express the power of the god as a supernatural being. However, the area around the metal fittings is not painted with vermilion, as seen in the Mikazuki and Awa-otoko masks, but is left with white gofun (powdered shell), and a faint ink line is used to shade the corners of the eyes. The Shintai represents a god that is more youthful and pure, rather than a god as a spirit, and is especially worn when emphasizing dignity. Toshi Ziemon, who is believed to be the maker, was from Harima, but does not appear in the documents related to Noh mask makers. Due to amateur photography, the colors may appear different depending on the lighting. However, after purchase, it has been stored in a dark place without being used at all, so it is a beautiful item without any noticeable scratches or stains, in my amateur opinion.
