This is a superb performance by a one-horn quartet led by Coleman Hawkins, a major tenor saxophone player who was active from the swing era to the bebop period and had a great influence on later generations. Recorded in 1962, the rhythm section consists of veteran musicians: Tommy Flanagan (p), a master of classic albums; Major Holley (b), popular for his unique style of singing arco solos; and the solid Eddie Locke (ds). You can hear Hawkins' dignified and commanding blowing and the wonderful sense of unity. It starts with the cheerful swing of "Go Lil Liza," but Hawkins' deeply moving performance on the ballads "Don't Love Me" and the following "Love Song From “Apache”" is particularly touching. US Original Impulse AS-34 stereo vangelder The gatefold coating jacket has scratches, folds, coating lift, yellowing on the inside, and some peeling due to aging. The record has peeling on the label surface, and there are fine scratches on the record surface, with occasional small hissing, light noise, and popping noises, especially in quiet parts. It's a wonderful stereo sound typical of vangelder, but please refrain from purchasing if you are at all concerned about noise. There is a tear due to aging, but it comes with the original company sleeve.
