It overlooks the Sea of Japan to the west and the majestic Mount Hakusan to the east. The Nomi region, centered on this town, is known as a "treasure trove of historical sites" in the prefecture, with important sites densely located from the Nomi-Enuma hills in the east to the Nomi plains in the west. From the Paleolithic period to the early modern period, we can see the continuous lives of people, suggesting that this land, blessed with a rich natural environment, has been a suitable place for people to live since ancient times. Among the important historical sites, the Nomi Kofun Cluster, which is particularly distributed in the town area, includes the national historic sites of Wadayama and Suetera-yama Kofun Clusters, as well as the Akitsuneyama, Teraiyama, and Tatsunokuchi-Nishiyama sub-clusters, totaling over sixty tombs. It is a representative Kofun cluster in the Hokuriku region, where a wide variety of tombs from the early to late Kofun periods can be seen, along with excellent and numerous burial goods. The survey of the Akitsuneyama Kofun Cluster, which was conducted this time, was carried out over four years from fiscal year 1992 to fiscal year 1995. In particular, it was revealed that the main tomb, No. 1, is a magnificent giant keyhole-shaped tomb, about 140 meters long, with a stone covering, making it one of the finest in the Hokuriku region. This has led to significant results that are rewriting the ancient history of Hokuriku, which we believe is very significant. Furthermore, the addition of valuable cultural heritage to our hometown is a source of great joy. Based on the results of this survey, the town plans to develop this Kofun cluster in the future, and together with the national historic sites of Wadayama and Suetera-yama Kofun Clusters, which have already been developed, we will strive to realize "town development that utilizes historical sites," which is one of the visions for the 21st century. Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Ishikawa Prefectural Board of Education Cultural Division, the Ishikawa Prefectural Buried Cultural Properties Center, the Ishikawa Archaeological Research Association, the Kanazawa University Archaeological Research Association, the Akitsune district, and all related organizations for their consistent and enthusiastic guidance and cooperation throughout the long-term excavation and the publication of this report. March, 1996 Teijiro Sakai, Mayor of Terai Town
