Due to the vast land, diverse ethnic groups, and differences in natural conditions and lifestyles across regions, Chinese residential architecture is diverse and full of creativity. These buildings are the crystallization of the wisdom and efforts of the workers, conveying history and people's lives to the present. In 1986, this definitive postage stamp was issued to introduce the residential architectural art of various regions and ethnic groups in China. The design name of Stamp 1 (left) is "Shanghai Dwellings." The "Shikumen" houses, lined up in the alleys, represent the old residences of Shanghai. They are two- to three-story terraced houses with skylights and ventilation, a housing style suitable for the densely populated and land-limited Shanghai. The Shikumen houses depicted on the stamp well represent the characteristics of Shanghai dwellings. The design name of Stamp 2 (center) is "Jiangsu Dwellings." Jiangsu Province's dwellings are characterized by being built along the water, with a structure that faces the street in front and the river behind. They are two-story buildings with a compact layout, designed with ventilation and heat insulation in mind. The white walls and gray tiles, surrounded by water, express the bright and refreshing atmosphere unique to the water towns. The design name of Stamp 3 (right) is "Yunnan Dwellings." Yunnan Province is a region inhabited by many ethnic groups, and each ethnic group has its own distinctive dwellings. Among them, the bamboo buildings of the Dai ethnic group, which are cantilevered structures, are typical, with a two-story structure. The bamboo building depicted on the stamp is in the style of the early 1980s, expressing a new form that has been improved upon the traditional form. These are actually used items from that time.
