A pair of Wajima-nuri (lacquerware) soup bowls from the Bunsei era of the Edo period. They are simply black and red, but the luster and depth are amazing. I think they would look perfectly at home displayed in a modern art museum. This deep luster is something I haven't often seen in lacquerware, even though I've seen quite a bit. When you hold them, you understand how amazing Wajima-nuri is. They are lighter and easier to hold than plastic, and you can feel how strong they are. Of course, they require care after use, and detergents and dishwashers cannot be used. The last three photos are of the box these bowls came in. It's incredibly old, and the Bunsei era is written on the inside of the lid. The era ended in 1835, so these bowls are about 190 years old. They must have been well cared for, but even so, it's a testament to the traditional craftsmanship that they can still maintain this quality after 190 years. There are only 20 sets in total, and I use about half of them myself, so I plan to sell only 10 sets. Don't miss this opportunity!
