Makoto Kagoshima Stole This is a hand-block-printed shawl made in an Indian workshop. It is made using a traditional dyeing technique where skilled artisans press wooden blocks for each color to finish the design. The wooden blocks carved for each part have a strong presence, and the ink bleeding and unevenness unique to handmade items give this piece a rich character. The large size allows it to be used as a simple apron when wrapped around the waist, or it can be beautifully draped over a table as an interior cloth. Block printing is a dyeing method that requires a great deal of time and the skill of artisans, as the blocks are pressed for each color. Although unused, there are some wrinkles due to home storage.
