This is a shakuhachi made from the powerful and beautiful form of a bamboo root, known as "nedake" (root bamboo). The maker's mark is stamped on the side, indicating that it is an old instrument made with careful handcraftsmanship. The inside of the tube is finished with red lacquer, giving it the deep texture unique to old shakuhachi.
