It is said that the origin is that Nomi no Sukune, who is said to be the ancestor of sumo wrestling, called many Haniwa and pottery makers from the country of Izumo and had them make clay figures in Izumo, Sakurai City. This later became Haniwa (clay figures), and in the Edo period, they were actively made and loved as souvenirs for visiting Hase-dera Temple.
