Jōbōji town (present-day Ninohe city) in Iwate Prefecture, made famous by the lectures of Jakucho Setouchi, is home to Tendai-ji Temple, where Setouchi served as chief priest. Tendai-ji is the oldest famous temple in the Tohoku region. Jōbōji lacquerware originated about 1200 years ago when monks began making it as temple furnishings. Jōbōji is Japan's largest lacquerware production area, having gained attention for its lacquer, which enabled the restoration of the Golden Pavilion and was used in the Jomon period at the Sannai-Maruyama site. Jōbōji lacquerware developed for everyday use, so it could not survive as a high-end product like other production areas in the 1960s when plastic products became widespread, and it was quickly devastated. After nearly 20 years, Seiji Iwadate and his son Takashi established the Jōbōji Lacquerware Craft Enterprise Cooperative to revive Jōbōji lacquerware as everyday lacquerware for modern use. As Jōbōji lacquerware is for everyday use, it is by no means a high-end craft product, but it is undoubtedly traditional Japanese lacquerware that has undergone careful undercoat processing with over 20 steps. It can be repaired repeatedly and is durable enough to last 100 years. It has no ornamentation, but its color and luster will increase with each day of use.
