It is said to have begun in the Edo period when the lord of Miharu Domain, Akita Chikatoki, brought back doll makers from Edo during his sankin-kotai (alternate attendance) and gave the "Deko Yashiki" to the farmers in the Takashiba settlement, allowing them to learn the techniques of doll making. There are many works with motifs of gorgeous dances and Kabuki, and the elegant and refined Miharu Hariko is one of the leading folk toys in Japan, not only in Tohoku.
