I repurposed a kimono to make a hanten (Japanese padded coat). The lining is cotton-padded quilting, making it very warm. The collar overlaps like a kimono, preserving the traditional Japanese clothing style. I made it with women in mind, but it's also okay for men. If hand washing, wash quickly by pressing, lightly spin dry, hang to dry in the shade, and iron while slightly damp with a pressing cloth.
