I believe this is Aizu-nuri lacquerware, a black lacquered jewelry box. When you open the lid, a music box plays, and the song is "Kojo no Tsuki" (Moon over the Ruined Castle). It's 21 centimeters wide, 11 centimeters deep, and 10 centimeters high. (These measurements are approximate, as they were taken by hand.)
