It was worn with the olive drab side out for regular field use, providing camouflage, and with the snow white side out in mountainous snowy areas. Being reversible, the fabric is double-layered throughout, and the long length and hood make it a luxurious coat that uses a generous amount of fabric. When the front placket with the hood is closed to the top, it covers half of the face, designed for wind and cold protection. The olive side has slash pockets on both sides that also serve as hand warmers, and large patch pockets with flaps. The white side, which is not often worn, is plain. A belt is attached at the waist to improve the fit, and the snap buttons at the bottom of the hem can be closed in front and back under the crotch to prevent wind from entering and increase heat retention. The M-42 parka, which established the basic form of the hooded overcoat, was later succeeded by the M-47 parka.
