The ryuteki is a transverse flute used in the Togaku (Tang music) of Gagaku (Japanese court music). The ryuteki embellishes and colors the melody played by the hichiriki, which plays the main melody. Its tone is likened to the cry of a dragon soaring between heaven and earth, and its light, dynamic, and powerful sound is its charm. It is used in Togaku ensembles, Saibara, Ro-ei, Kumeuta, Yamato-uta, and Okura of Gagaku, and is about 40 cm long. It has seven finger holes in addition to the mouthpiece.
