This is a kokeshi doll made by Tomio Sato, a kokeshi craftsman from Togatta. Work from around 1963. It has some age-related scratches, but it is beautiful and lovely without any noticeable stains. Height: Approximately 18cm (The following is from Kokeshi wiki) Tomio Sato (1928-2016) Lineage: Togatta Teacher: Bunsuke Sato Disciple: Kesakichi Sato [Biography] Born on March 19, 1928, as the eldest son of Bunsuke Sato and Yoshino in Togatta Shinchi. After graduating from elementary school in 1941, he apprenticed in woodworking under Bunsuke. He started with thread winders and tops, and his first kokeshi dolls were small root attachments ordered by Hantaro Suzuki. He was closed for business from 1944 to the end of the war because he worked at a military factory in Funaoka, and after the war, he reopened and continued to operate in Togatta Onsen with his father Bunsuke and his younger brother Fujimi. Around 1958, he taught Kesakichi Sato how to make kokeshi dolls. He briefly employed his cousin Hideo Ohata as a craftsman, but after Bunsuke passed away in 1977, he worked alone on the potter's wheel. His eye injury worsened, and he retired around 2008. He passed away on April 24, 2016, at the age of 89.
