This is a solid wood plate with the gentle, undulating grain of cherry blossoms. I believe I purchased it at a solo exhibition by woodworker Jiro Suda at Tamagawa Denen Chofu In My Basket (now relocated to Suwa) about 24.5 years ago. Among the many cutlery, bowls, and plates on display, I happened upon this natural wood board. It has aged but is unused. I don't think you often see boards of this thickness even at exhibitions. I believe the wood is mountain cherry, but I'm not certain. It makes use of the natural shape with the bark edge, and the smooth carving without any tool marks, along with the characteristic moist luster of cherry wood, creates a high-quality atmosphere. It's perfect as a table board, or as a stand to highlight vases and other objects. Over time, it has taken on a slightly amber color, deepening the grain of the wood. It has not been painted and has a natural, unfinished look. In my opinion, it doesn't feel imposing despite its thickness. The smooth surface finish is an early expression of Mr. Suda's style of "leaving the wood to breathe." There is some slight warping, which is characteristic of solid wood. Please enjoy the knots and cracks as part of the charm of this solid wood piece. Width (center): 28.5cm Length: 57.5cm Thickness: 2.8cm
