A major characteristic of Koishiwara-yaki is the patterns that are regularly applied using blades or brushes while rotating the pottery on a potter's wheel. Techniques called "Tobi-kanna" (flying plane) and "Hakeme" (brush marks) create patterns that are orderly yet warm. Koishiwara-yaki is mainly used for everyday household goods. While being ceramic, it has the thinness and lightness of porcelain. Its beautiful shape and colors, which give a sense of elegance within a warm and rustic texture, are attractive.
