I unraveled a Meisen kimono and made a long skirt. The original kimono still had basting threads attached and showed no signs of wear, but the white background was slightly dull. (Photos 14-17) When I tested washing a scrap piece, the red dye bled heavily, so I did not wash it and only performed high-temperature sterilization with an iron. This boldly patterned kimono has become a unique skirt. If you look closely, it's a landscape painting depicting mountains, pine trees, pagodas, and more, which is very interesting. The fabric has a sheen and a lovely crispness characteristic of Meisen. I added three long tucks each in the front and back to control the volume. Although it has plenty of gathers, the tucks help to create a neat waist and hip line. Silk fabric is expensive, so it's difficult to make something by purchasing fabric. Unraveling old kimonos is a lot of work, but it's wonderful to be able to enjoy the feel of pure silk in everyday life. It's also great to be able to enjoy the colors and combinations unique to Japan. I enjoy sewing that only involves straight stitches. I remake old kimonos, obi, and furoshiki such as Tsumugi, Meisen, and Komon. Please consider this if you understand that there may be remaining threads, small holes, stains from used items, distortions, double stitching, etc. ✳︎ Please avoid washing as much as possible. After wearing, hang it on a hanger and let it breathe. ✳︎ Items other than the skirt are for photography purposes. ✳︎ No lining is attached. Please use a petticoat when wearing.
