In the Edo period, with the arrival of a peaceful era, its decorative qualities were utilized to create small personal items such as tobacco pouches and document cases. Through a special tanning technique, it achieves a pure white finish without bleaching or dyeing. Because it does not take ordinary dyes, patterns are hand-painted one by one using special chemicals and pigments. It has the curious property of becoming whiter in the sun, and the surface becomes more lustrous with use.
