This is a kimono by Sachiko Aragaki, who was designated a Living National Treasure in October 2024 for her work with Yaeyama Jofu. Sachiko Aragaki is a dyeing and weaving artist residing in Ishigaki City. She revived the ancient "kukurizome" (tie-dyeing) technique and was recognized as a Living National Treasure in October 2024 for her work with Yaeyama Jofu. Sachiko Aragaki studied dyeing and weaving techniques under Shizuko Oshiro and Hideto Ishigaki in Okinawa Prefecture and established a workshop for Yaeyama Jofu. Based on the results of research and restoration projects of traditional Yaeyama Jofu, Aragaki's works are characterized by colors that make the most of various plant dyes and free kasuri patterns unique to kukurizome (tie-dyeing). She has presented her works in numerous exhibitions. She is also dedicated to guiding and nurturing the next generation. As a holder of the Okinawa Prefectural Intangible Cultural Property "Yaeyama Jofu," she currently serves as the representative of the Yaeyama Jofu Preservation Society. Yaeyama Jofu is a hemp fabric called "jobu" produced on Ishigaki Island and other islands in the Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa Prefecture. It is woven with threads dyed with plant dyes using ramie as the raw material. It was designated as a traditional craft product by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1989. It is durable, well-ventilated, and has a refreshing, smooth texture. The process of making hand-spun yarn from ramie is very time-consuming and labor-intensive, and it is famous for "umisarashi" (sea bleaching), where the woven fabric is bleached in the sea. The refreshing coolness unique to natural hemp fabric is the true pleasure of summer wear. This is a piece that will make a difference in your summer attire, and we hope you will enjoy this summer weaving, which is becoming increasingly "幻" (phantom/rare) year by year(^^) ●Color: Indigo navy ●Size: Wide collar, single-layered Length 164cm Sleeve length 68cm Sleeve length 49cm Front width 24.5cm Back width 30.5cm There is almost no seam allowance in the sleeves or hem. *Please note that there may be slight errors due to amateur measurements. ●Material: Kimono fabric: 100% ramie Collar lining, seat lining: silk ●Condition: It has been worn once and dry-cleaned, so it is clean and in very good condition.
