For sale as part of a collection clear-out. This is a Dan mask from the Dan people of Côte d'Ivoire, Africa. It is the type of mask that is hung on the wall of a house as a talisman, rather than worn. (It looks like a passport mask, which is used for identification, but I don't think it is one due to its size.) A large number of cowrie shells are attached around the face, and steel teeth are embedded in the mouth. Cowrie shells are symbols of abundance and economic prosperity, and are often used in charms for wishing for a bountiful harvest. Size: Approximately 30cm high, 18cm wide (excluding beard) As it is an old item, there are corresponding scratches and stains overall.
