The "destroy" finish is achieved by repeatedly applying wax to the suede side (reverse side) of the cow leather by hand by craftsmen, resulting in a shoe that looks like it's made of smooth leather. The overall quality and atmosphere of the early models are very good, but even the black ones often have a greenish or purplish tint, and there is considerable variation between individual pairs. Also, the stitching was often loose, and many pairs had the soles separating from the uppers, or the leather near the inner heels coming off. The reissued models tend to turn brown with wear, but they are very easy to coordinate with black items. Also, although about 8 years have passed since their release, the reissued models rarely show sole separation or insole peeling.
