I am releasing a special collection. This is a Daiku Ningyo, an indoor deity from the Tono area of the Tohoku region. It is a particularly rare folk artifact among the Japanese cursed objects I own. Similar items are also housed in the Tono City Museum. Please refer to it if you wish (see photo 8). Daiku Ningyo are used in the completion ceremonies of houses. The master carpenter who built the house would make a shrine using the remaining lumber used to build the house, place wooden plaques and dolls inside, attach it to a pillar, and enshrine it as the guardian deity of the house. The items placed inside the shrine seem to vary depending on the region, and sometimes include bundles of hair, combs, and mirrors. However, shrines containing wooden plaques similar to this Daiku Ningyo (Amaterasu Omikami) often have a simple composition of wooden plaques and paper dolls. Kizen Sasaki, also known as the Japanese Grimm, speculated that the strange phenomena occurring in the houses of Tohoku might be due to deities enshrined indoors, such as the Daiku Ningyo. (Kizen Sasaki is the person who told the stories of Tono to Kunio Yanagita, who visited the Tono region when writing the Tono Monogatari.) This is an extremely valuable folk artifact. Since acquiring this item, I have never seen a Daiku Ningyo on the market. Due to its age, there are corresponding scratches, stains, and repair marks overall. Please examine the photos carefully and purchase with the understanding that no claims or returns will be accepted.
