Size: Length: 20mm Width: 15mm Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne Born on August 29, 1769, in Grenoble, France, as one of eight siblings, she was strong-willed, bold, and generous. She was educated at the Convent of the Visitation, and at the age of 18, she joined the same convent against her family's wishes, but the convent was soon closed due to the French Revolution. After that, for 11 years, she risked her life to visit the imprisoned, helped forbidden priests visit the faithful, educated and cared for poor children, and worked hard to reopen the convent and boarding school. In December 1804, Philippine joined the Society of the Sacred Heart, and in 1818, she set sail for America on the Rebecca with four nuns to bring the Gospel to the Native Americans. After a difficult voyage, she opened a log cabin school (a free school) in St. Charles, but the situation in the frontier was harsh, and the population was small, so she had to close this school after a year and opened a new school in the nearby town of Florissant. While struggling with English, Philippine served as the superior and principal of the convent, willingly taking on heavy labor such as procuring food, chopping wood, gardening, repairing shoes and clothes, nursing the sick, and making soap and candles. She is said to have slept in a small storage room under the stairs and prayed all night in the adjacent chapel, returning there so as not to disturb anyone. After that, the number of people in America who aspired to join the Society of the Sacred Heart increased, and soon Philippine became the head of five convents. While adapting to American culture, she strove to maintain the spirit of the Society of the Sacred Heart, and the schools followed the Society of the Sacred Heart's curriculum. The school in St. Louis also accepted students other than white people and opened the first orphanage.
