Type... Domestic Mineral These are 8 pieces of scapolite that have been altered from andalusite collected in the Wazuka River in Wazuka Town, Kyoto, a long time ago. Red crystals are not visible; the local ones are altered scapolite, mostly white due to sericite, but some are transparent or pale brown depending on the degree of alteration. The characteristically square, prismatic crystals, as shown in the photos, are around 1-2mm square and are quite hard. Local scapolite does not show the cross-shaped pattern on its square cross-section. The hornfels matrix ranges from small stones of 2-3cm square to 4-5cm square, with a total weight of about 150g.
