Kikuchi Hojudo began in 1604 when the first generation Kiheiji was protected as the official caster of Lord Yoshiaki Mogami, the lord of Yamagata Castle. The lineage has been passed down from the first to the 9th generation Kiheiji, the 10th to the 12th generation Unosuke, the 13th to the 14th generation Kumaji Masanao, and now to the 15th generation Masanao. They have received numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the US World Exposition (1926), the highest award at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition twice, and the Japan Arts and Culture Foundation Award. In addition, the production technology of Wazuku kama, made using iron and iron sand from ancient Japan, has been revived in technology with the Nagano family (currently the second generation Tetsushi Nagano) and continues to stubbornly protect that technology today.
