Yuga Shrine is said to have been founded in 790 (Enryaku 9) by Wake no Kiyomaro, who also enshrined his ancestor, Otohiko no Mikoto. The oldest existing munafuda (votive tablet) records that in 1112 (Tenei 3), during the Heian period, the Wake clan established Hachiman-gu Shrine on Kamiyama, Nishikubo, as the general guardian deity of Nitta-go. Since then, it has been deeply revered by powerful figures such as the Wake clan (gunji), the Fujiwara clan (jito), the Akashi, Urakami, Ukita, and Ikeda clans, with particular devotion from the Akamatsu clan, who were the shugo (provincial constables) of Harima, Bizen, and Mimasaka provinces. This offering includes a set of two items: a goshuin (temple stamp) and a yuisyo (historical document) for the New Year's celebration of 2026 (Reiwa 8). Wake Shrine has a long tradition as a prayer shrine, with secret teachings passed down through the ages. Visitors come from all over to pray for safe childbirth, warding off death, protection from misfortune, stopping night crying, good luck with house layouts and directions, naming ceremonies, and other special prayers.
