This is a Kaga Moyoke Tora, a traditional toy from Ishikawa Prefecture, found at a flea market. The light blue eyebrows and dazed expression are incredibly charming. This is a traditional toy that has been made in Kaga for a long time and was apparently displayed during festivals. It is considered an auspicious item that invokes the courage to ward off evil spirits with the might of a tiger, but Kaga's papier-mâché tigers are characterized by their rounded, cute design, and their loveliness has made them cherished as bringers of good fortune. This one is made by "Nakajima Menya," a craftsman of traditional Kanazawa toys. There are some signs of age-related dirt, but the condition is good, with no cracks or dents in the papier-mâché.
