A hanging scroll from a twenty-three night gathering of the moon-waiting faith, author unknown. The Bodhisattva Seishi, who is considered to be the incarnation of the moon, is vividly depicted. Moon-waiting (tsukimachi), a folk belief born from the daily lives of the common people, is "an event in which people gather on the night of the 23rd of the old lunar calendar and wait for the moon to rise while eating and drinking together." It dates back to the Muromachi period, and it seems to have been actively practiced throughout Japan from the Edo period to the early Showa era, but it is now rarely performed. The people of the time, who prayed for safe childbirth, child-rearing, and to ward off evil spirits, may have associated the moon, which gently illuminates the night, with Kannon (Avalokiteśvara). It comes with a box, but it will be sent without a lid. Also, it is old, and the binding cord and hanging cord are missing, and there are noticeable tears and wrinkles.
