Born in Hizen. His real name was Zentsu, his azana was Toshu, and his other pen name was Hakugaikutsu. He studied under 24 teachers of the Inzan Ien and Takushu Kosen lineages. He inherited the Dharma from Rozan Genma. He was the chief priest of Zuigan-ji Temple in Matsushima and Kaisei-ji Temple in Nishinomiya. Nogi Maresuke and Kodama Gentaro also practiced Zen under him.
