This is an unused Akama inkstone, but it has been tuned by Minista (reshaping the ink well and ink surface to improve the inkstone's performance). Akama stone is an inkstone made from red stone from Yamaguchi Prefecture. It uses red stone from the Kanmon layers of eastern Fukuoka Prefecture to western Yamaguchi Prefecture, but is now only quarried in western Yamaguchi Prefecture (Ube City). Akama stone is classified into 4-5 types, and this is the Akama Shiuun stone type. Akama inkstone comes from the old name of Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture (Akamaseki). Originally called Akamaseki Suzuri, it is now called Akama Suzuri. The reason it came to be called Akamaseki Suzuri is because the inkstones were made and sold in Shimonoseki. Initially, the inkstones used stone from eastern Fukuoka Prefecture. There are various transitions when you look back at the history. You can write lines with a good flow in kana (up to half-cut paper). You can draw pictures with a sense of depth and three-dimensionality in ink wash painting. You can write lines with a sense of depth and differences in base line bleeding in kanji (up to half-page paper). It works well with both pine soot ink (blue ink) and oil soot ink (brown ink), producing a beautiful, transparent ink color.
